Troubleshoot fiber laser cutting burrs by checking nozzle condition, gas delivery, focus and cutting speed, then verify the result on production samples.

Start with the defect pattern

Inspect the complete contour, including straight sections, corners, small holes and the piercing area. Note whether the burr is continuous, appears mainly at corners or occurs on only one side of the part. Photograph the underside as well as the top surface. These observations help narrow the investigation, but a photograph alone cannot identify the root cause.

Compare a poor sample with a retained acceptable sample from the same material specification. If both the sheet and the cutting settings have changed, separate those variables before drawing conclusions.

Check the nozzle and gas delivery

The nozzle directs assist gas into the cutting zone, where gas flow helps remove molten material. Inspect the nozzle opening for damage and contamination, and check alignment using the cutting-head manufacturer's procedure. Use the nozzle type specified for the material, thickness and gas.

Review the gas supply under cutting conditions. A pressure reading while the machine is idle does not describe the complete operating condition. Ask the equipment supplier to confirm the required supply capacity, purity and approved pressure range. Raising pressure without a controlled test can increase consumption without resolving the defect.

Review focus and speed methodically

Confirm that the selected cutting recipe matches the actual material grade and thickness. Check focus calibration and nozzle stand-off according to the machine documentation. Avoid copying a focus value from a different cutting head: the same displayed number may not represent the same physical setup.

Change one approved parameter at a time, cut the same sample and label the result. Include corners and small features in the test rather than judging only a long straight cut. Record the settings that meet the required edge condition and dimensions.

Decide what still needs deburring

Good cutting settings reduce unnecessary finishing work, but the finished part may still require edge rounding or a specified surface condition. Treat these as separate acceptance requirements. A part that separates cleanly from the sheet is not automatically ready for coating or handling.

Track the time required to finish an acceptable part alongside cutting time. The most useful setting is the one that supports the whole production route.

Frequently asked questions

Does more laser power always remove burrs?

No. Burr formation depends on the complete cutting setup. Confirm nozzle condition, gas delivery and the correct material recipe before changing power.

Can a deburring machine replace cutting-process correction?

It can process suitable residual burrs, but recurring cutting defects should still be investigated. Otherwise, finishing may become an avoidable production bottleneck.

Discuss your cutting application

Send KNOPPO your material grade, thickness, sample drawing and photographs of both cut faces. These details provide a clearer basis for discussing a fiber laser cutting machine and any downstream deburring requirements.

The Role of Servo Motors in Fiber Laser Cutting Machines

Among these components, the servo motor plays a critical role in controlling the movement accuracy and overall performance of the machine. Many customers focus mainly on laser power when purchasing a fiber laser cutting machine, but the motion system is equally important. A powerful laser source cannot achieve excellent cutting results without a stable and precise servo system.
