Fiber Laser Cutting Cost per Part: What to Measure

Set the boundaries of the calculation

Define what the quoted cost includes. A cutting-only figure should cover the agreed activities at the laser station. A finished-part figure may also include deburring, bending or coating. Both are useful, but they cannot be compared directly without matching the scope.

Use a consistent period, such as one completed batch. Divide the included costs by the number of accepted parts from that batch. Keep rejected parts and rework visible rather than treating every cut outline as usable output.

Measure material yield

Nesting affects how many usable parts are produced from a sheet. Compare layouts using the same material grade, sheet size and order quantity. Include any restrictions on grain direction, part orientation or surface protection.

A dense layout is not automatically the best layout. Consider whether it makes parts difficult to remove, identify or sort. Record reusable remnants separately and use a consistent method for valuing scrap. Otherwise, two calculations can appear different simply because their accounting rules differ.

Record the full batch time

Measure programming, setup, loading, cutting, unloading and sorting. Record whether activities happen sequentially or overlap. Do not add overlapping tasks as if they all extend the machine cycle, and do not ignore operator work merely because it takes place while the laser is running.

For a realistic comparison, include a repeat job and a short mixed batch. The first shows sustained production; the second reveals changeover effort and the practical effect of different part families.

Use actual operating costs

Record assist-gas consumption, electricity, consumables and labour with the measurement method stated. Separate measured values from supplier estimates. Use local tariffs and your actual gas-supply arrangement when calculating costs.

A simple batch worksheet should include:

  • Material cost and the treatment of scrap or reusable remnants.
  • Assist gas and electricity used during the agreed production period.
  • Consumables and maintenance allocation.
  • Operator and handling labour within the defined scope.
  • Inspection, rework and finishing costs where included.

Check the next production station

If cut parts wait for manual grinding, the laser's additional capacity may not translate into faster deliveries. Record the finishing workload generated by the batch. For parts requiring deburring and edge rounding, evaluate that operation using the same sample family.

Also distinguish capacity from demand. An additional shift of theoretical output has limited financial value if the order book cannot use it. Base the purchasing decision on your expected product mix and operating schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher-power machine always cheaper per part?

No. The result depends on the material mix, accepted output, operating costs and whether the surrounding process can use the additional capacity.

What should I send for a useful comparison?

Provide representative drawings, material specifications, typical batch quantities and the required finished edge condition.

Compare your real production jobs

The Role of Servo Motors in Fiber Laser Cutting Machines

Among these components, the servo motor plays a critical role in controlling the movement accuracy and overall performance of the machine. Many customers focus mainly on laser power when purchasing a fiber laser cutting machine, but the motion system is equally important. A powerful laser source cannot achieve excellent cutting results without a stable and precise servo system.
