Inspect the edges, not only the faces

Check the outside contour, internal openings and locations near piercing points. Record where burrs remain and whether the required edge profile has been achieved. Give the coating team the same sample locations to inspect after finishing.

Avoid approving a part from a single attractive photograph. Consistent lighting, close views of the edge and a defined inspection method provide a clearer record. For critical applications, follow the customer's specified measurement and coating-test requirements.

Review the cut-edge oxide condition

Oxygen-assisted laser cutting can leave oxide on steel cut edges. Where the coating route requires its removal, specify oxide treatment as a separate processing target. A shiny top face does not prove that the vertical cut edge has been prepared correctly.

Confirm that the selected tool arrangement reaches the relevant edge surfaces. Simply increasing abrasive pressure is not a reliable substitute for choosing a suitable process. Inspect the treated edges before the part proceeds to cleaning and coating.

Define the rounding requirement

Sharp edges can be difficult locations for reliable coating coverage. Edge rounding can help the preparation process, but it does not guarantee coating life. The required profile should come from the application, drawing or agreed coating specification.

Where a radius is specified, confirm the measuring method and inspection locations. Include external corners and internal contours where relevant. Avoid adopting an arbitrary universal radius for every bracket, enclosure or structural component.

Validate the whole route

After mechanical treatment, parts may still carry dust, oil or other contamination. Agree the cleaning and pretreatment sequence with the coating supplier. Handle and store the prepared parts in a way that supports that process.

Use representative samples to assess:

  • Burr removal and the required edge profile before coating.
  • Cut-edge oxide condition where removal is specified.
  • Cleaning and pretreatment according to the coating route.
  • Coverage and appearance at edges after coating.
  • Adhesion or durability tests required by the customer specification.

If coated samples fail, investigate the complete route. Changing the deburring settings alone may not solve a problem caused by contamination, pretreatment or coating conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does every laser-cut steel part need oxide removal?

The need depends on the cutting method, existing edge condition and the downstream specification. Review it with the coating provider for the actual application.

Does a deburring machine replace chemical pretreatment?

No. Mechanical finishing and chemical pretreatment address different requirements. Establish the complete route with the coating supplier.

Plan the preparation stage

For steel components that will be powder coated, share the incoming condition and required edge treatment with KNOPPO. Discuss the proposed metal deburring configuration as part of the complete finishing process.

The Role of Servo Motors in Fiber Laser Cutting Machines

Among these components, the servo motor plays a critical role in controlling the movement accuracy and overall performance of the machine. Many customers focus mainly on laser power when purchasing a fiber laser cutting machine, but the motion system is equally important. A powerful laser source cannot achieve excellent cutting results without a stable and precise servo system.
