Describe the complete geometry

Overall length and width are only the starting point. Record thickness, mass, flatness, narrow sections and openings. Two parts with the same outer dimensions can behave differently if one is solid and the other has little contact area.

Include the smallest and most difficult recurring parts in the sample set. Do not use a larger solid coupon to establish suitability for an entire family of small components. Identify whether formed parts are included, as a process intended for flat sheet metal may not be appropriate after bending.

Review the holding method

Vacuum conveyors and other holding arrangements are available in some deburring configurations. Their suitability depends on the machine design and the workpiece. Confirm the supported application with the supplier instead of assuming that any vacuum-equipped conveyor can hold every small part.

For a vacuum system, review belt contact, openings in the part and the permitted loading pattern. Ask how the conveyor is inspected and maintained. The advertised minimum part size should be interpreted with its stated conditions, not as an unconditional limit for every geometry.

Test tool contact and part stability

Agree the approved processing setup before the test. Record part orientation, feed speed, tools and pass count. Observe stability through the complete cycle with guards in place and the supplier's operating procedure followed.

If a part moves or is not held as intended, stop the evaluation and review the setup. Do not compensate by placing a hand near the tools or improvising an unapproved carrier. Any fixture or carrier arrangement needs supplier approval and its own validation.

Inspect the finished parts

After processing, inspect burr removal and edge treatment at the locations marked before the test. Also check whether small features, thin sections and protected surfaces remain acceptable. A part that travels through the machine successfully has not necessarily met the quality requirement.

Record:

  • Part identity, material grade and thickness.
  • Loading orientation and any approved carrier used.
  • Tool configuration, settings and number of passes.
  • Edge condition and critical dimensions after processing.
  • Handling time, usable output and any rejected parts.

Confirm whether the reverse face requires another pass. Include turning, loading and collection in the production estimate rather than quoting conveyor speed alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is vacuum holding suitable for all small metal parts?

No. Suitability depends on geometry, contact area, material condition and the machine's holding design. Test the actual part.

Should a small-parts machine have the widest possible conveyor?

Working width is only one factor. Holding reliability, tool suitability, quality and handling requirements are more useful selection criteria.

The Role of Servo Motors in Fiber Laser Cutting Machines

Among these components, the servo motor plays a critical role in controlling the movement accuracy and overall performance of the machine. Many customers focus mainly on laser power when purchasing a fiber laser cutting machine, but the motion system is equally important. A powerful laser source cannot achieve excellent cutting results without a stable and precise servo system.
